Partnerships

It’s impossible to achieve whole-of-landscape natural resource management outcomes without working together, so partnerships in NRM are crucial at all levels.

The natural resource management sector has its roots in collaboration. From day one we’ve been focussed on working collaboratively to ensure people are engaged and that any outcomes are sustainable over the long term.

We engage many partners to develop our regional NRM plans. In fact, more than 1200 partners have been engaged in regional NRM planning across the state in the past 2 years. We build relationships to deliver projects on the ground and EY recently captured data around the skills we outsource at the regional level. And we work collaboratively with partners to ensure policies are developed which meet the needs of people who rely on our natural assets for their lifestyles and livelihoods.

Partners at the regional NRM level

Regional NRM organisations focus on partnerships that achieve outcomes for the natural assets that underpin the quality of life of the people that live and work in their communities. These partnerships usually include Traditional Owners, local governments, NGOs, landcare groups, agricultural groups and land managers and sometimes involves regional NRM organisations outsourcing skills to those partners.

Not only does this enhance those organisations it also diversifies regional economies and leverages employment growth.

We know the regional NRM sector has world class skills in this area as well. When we engaged EY to conduct a skills assessment of Queensland’s regional NRM organisations, they found that 100% of the groups boast community engagement skills – which encompasses partnership development, community facilitation and capacity building abilities.

As well as building these networks within their communities, regional NRM organisations are also building partnerships across regional boundaries by collaborating on strategic projects, developing policy and identifying and responding to emerging NRM needs. NRM Regions Queensland is, itself, a product of this collaboration.

NRM partnerships at the state level

At the state level, NRM Regions Queensland builds partnerships with organisations that can help our members achieve outcomes for land and water management.

We have MOUs in place with QWaLC and LGAQ that utilise a set of agreed partnership principles.

We also work collaboratively with other strategic partners on statewide projects such as the Land Restoration Fund, the Private Protected Areas Program (Nature Refuges) and the research sector.

NRM funding partners

Of course our funding partners are crucial to delivering natural resource management across Queensland. None of this work would be possible without investment from both the Queensland Government and the Australian Government.
