Understanding environmental markets: A practical guide for landholders and advisors
This guide provides an introduction to environmental markets — what they are, how they work and pathways to participation.

This guide was developed as part of the Carbon Farming and Environmental Markets Knowledge project, delivered by NRM Regions Australia, and funded by the Australian Government Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.

The guide is designed to provide a clear and practical overview for:

Landholders and land managers: Whether you own or manage properties in Australia, this guide is provided to help you understand the nuts and bolts of environmental markets. It offers insights on where to start and what opportunities might be relevant to you and your business.

Advisors: Regional natural resource managers and other local extension support officers are well placed to support landholders to navigate environmental markets. They have local knowledge, trusted relationships, and an understanding of what landscapes and farm businesses can realistically deliver to meet the conditions required by different markets.

This resource aims to provide landholders and their trusted advisors with the tools, language and background information to confidently engage in environmental market discussions and explore and influence the opportunities available.
