Queensland’s peak bodies for local government and natural resource management have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen the state’s natural environment.
The agreement between the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) and NRM Regions Queensland (NRMRQ) will enhance the coordination of land, water and biodiversity projects across the state.
The MOU establishes a formal schedule of joint activities, including monthly strategic meetings between policy leads and shared advocacy on priority NRM matters. Regional NRM organisations will also regularly engage with local councils.
NRMRQ Chair Julie Boyd said the MOU builds on years of successful collaboration:
“From the Wet Tropics to the south of the state, we can see what’s possible when we work together. In the north, Terrain NRM is partnering with Tablelands Regional Council and Traditional Owners to control toxic wild tobacco bush, protecting native species and livestock,” Ms Boyd said.
“In Southeast Queensland, Healthy Land & Water worked in collaboration with Brisbane City Council and the local catchment group to transform a neglected urban creek into a vibrant ecological corridor at Cicada Park. These successes show how councils and regional NRM organisations are already delivering for the environment and our communities, and this new agreement will only strengthen that impact.
“Local government is also a key partner for initiatives funded through the Queensland Government’s $117.84 million Natural Resource Management Expansion Program, which is supporting significant land, water and biodiversity projects over the next three years,” she said.
LGAQ President and Gladstone Mayor Matt Burnett said:
“The LGAQ and NRMRQ have a common interest in improving the coordination of natural resource management activities across Queensland.
“The LGAQ will continue to work with councils and other stakeholders to protect and strengthen Queensland’s natural environment.”
